The government of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh plans to begin laying tarmac for the 595km Ganga Expressway, one of India’s largest public–private partnership (PPP) projects, by the end of September, reports news site The Print.

The $4.5bn, six-lane road is being implemented by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), and will be constructed and maintained by Indian road specialist IRB Infrastructure and the Adani Enterprises conglomerate.

Awanish Awasthi, chairman of UPEIDA, said: “Close to 60% of clearing and grubbing work on the project has been completed. We have got the environment and forest clearance. The construction company has set up its office. Physical work on the ground will start by 30 September.”

When complete in 2024, the road will run from the city of Meerut, northeast of New Delhi, to Allahabad in the south of the state.

ThePrint notes that the government of Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh,  is aiming to complete the project ahead of India’s next general election in May 2024.

UPEIDA has acquired more than 94% of the land required, according to Awasthi.
