Seymour Whyte, the Australian subsidiary of France’s Vinci, has landed an early contractor involvement deal to build a rail line at the Port of Melbourne’s Swanson Dock East.
New York-based engineer WSP is the design partner on the project.
The rail link will move freight from the port’s container terminal and will be able to handle two 600m-long trains at once. There will also be new road works within the port precinct.
John Kirkwood, Seymour Whyte’s managing director, said: “We have worked collaboratively with Port of Melbourne to develop the preferred transport infrastructure engineering solution, seeking to understand and address the challenges and priorities for the port’s future.”
Courtney Hoops, Seymour Whyte’s general manager for Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia, added: “We are committed to minimising impacts and delivering best outcomes for our stakeholders. The challenges of a 24/7/365 operational environment will be managed through close coordination and interface management with project stakeholders – by continuing to work with them to ensure that port operations are maintained throughout the project.”
Construction work is due to begin in October 2021 and be complete in 2023.
