The 3.6ha Sydney Fish Market redevelopment in Blackwattle Bay is due to open on 19th January, coinciding with the Lunar New Year.
Dubbed the world’s biggest fish market, the development was designed by Danish architect 3XN along with BVN and Aspect Studios, and is located adjacent to the existing Fish Market in Pyrmont.
The new Sydney Fish Market will have 6,000 sq m of public space in a four-storey market hall with restaurants, fishmongers and specialty food retailers. A 15km-long waterfront promenade will link the market, running from Rozelle Bay to Woolloomooloo.
The 200m-long floating roof canopy was installed in February 2025, weighing 2,500 tonnes. Its supporting structure is formed of 594 timber roof beams, the longest of which is 32m.
The government of New South Wales hired Multiplex to build the market in November 2020.
Contracts worth A$670m were awarded to Australian suppliers for services including maritime piling, steel reinforcement and installation of the roof cassettes.

Bryan Skepper, Sydney Fish Market’s general manager, said: “Sydney Fish Market is a beloved institution among Sydneysiders, Australians, and international visitors.
“Therefore, it was integral to select a design team that will modernise and improve the site while recognising its long-standing heritage and retain the authentic experience that attracts customers and visitors.”
700 jobs were created during construction and 700 jobs will be created once the project is operational.
The market aims to attract six million visitors annually.
