WSP and Aurecon to design $1.1bn Australian highway

A joint venture consisting of Aurecon and WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff has been commissioned as the design team for a 41km section of the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing toll road in Queensland, northeast Australia.

The JV was picked by the Nexus consortium, which was chosen to design, construct, finance and operate the $1.1bn scheme in July this year.

Nexus is led by Ferrovial subsidiary Cintra Infraestructuras, with investor Plenary Group, Spanish group Acciona and Australian PLC Transfield Services.

The scope of works for the design includes earthworks, structures, pavements, drainage and flooding hydrology, road design and environmental services.

The project aims to improve freight traffic and the safety of commuters.

Work is expected to begin "in coming months" and be completed in 2018.
