Abandoned Sydney rail line is converted into elevated park

A disused rail line in Sydney, Australia, has been transformed into an elevated park.

The 500m disused corridor, which dates back to the mid-1800s, has been converted into a long, thin recreational area with the help of traditional materials such as gravel, concrete, steel and timber.

The Goods Line, as it is called, is located in Ultimo, an inner-city suburb of Sydney, and is a New South Wales government initiative.

The US$11m park is described as a "key strategic link and an important green space for Sydney’s most densely populated area", and "an example of the potential for design to transform isolated city spaces into creative and connected public destinations that enhance public life".

Australia’s Aspect Studios worked with design partner Chrofi to create the park, which connects more than 80,000 locals to Sydney Harbour.

Sacha Coles, the Goods Line project’s lead designer, said: "What was once a conduit for trade has been reinterpreted to carry the precious cargo of a thriving neighbourhood: culture, creativity and community."
