Work begins on 10 Design’s gastronomic complex in Shenzhen

Work has begun on a unique development in Shenzhen, China that will use the love of food to regenerate an old industrial area dating from modern China’s first embrace of capitalism.

Eighty-thousand square metres of restaurants and grocery stores will make the Sungang MixC Market Hall “an immersive gastronomic experience”, said the scheme’s architect, 10 Design, which has studios in London, Hong Kong, and elsewhere. 

Rising up from the foodopolis will be two office towers with 100,000 sq m of office and residential space.

10 Design says it wanted to break away from the conventional shopping mall and get back to a more traditional market square.
But this scheme gets a modern twist with a stainless steel sculptural canopy over the pedestrianised boulevard, and three floating box-shaped structures inspired by food truck containers.

It will, said 10 Design, “create a unique spatial experience to be discovered and explored, providing a richness of dining and other gastronomic experiences”.

MixC Market replaces a warehouse in the old industrial district of Sungang, dating to when Shenzhen began its phenomenal growth as a pilot for capitalism in the 1980s.

“The complex will mark an important milestone for the ongoing transformation of Sungang, acting as a catalyst to drive urban regeneration in the area,” said Miriam Auyeung, 10 Design’s chief operating officer.

Work on the project is due to complete in the third quarter of 2022.

The owner is state-owned conglomerate, China Resources.
