19 companies including six consortia have submitted bids to build a 14.3km section of high-speed railway linking Warsaw and Łódź as part of Poland’s Port Polska project.

It will overhaul Poland’s transport network with 2,000km of high-speed rail and highway upgrades to bring all major Polish cities to within a 2.5 hour journey from a new airport.

The rail section will run between the Airport Junction and Bolimów Junction.

The winner will design and build the railway for trains travelling up to 350km/h, plus 55 road and railway bridges and viaducts, drainage culverts, wildlife crossings and 30km of roads.

Bids have been received from:

  • Strabag and Tym-Bud;
  • Torpol, Mirbud and Kobylarnia;
  • Zue, Duna Polska and Polaqua;
  • Budimex;
  • Porr and Trakcja;
  • Gülkermak, Track Tek Construction, Unibep and Pomorskie Przedsiębiorstwo Mechaniczno-Torowe;
  • Mostostal Warszawa;
  • Intercor and NDI.

Delivery body Centralny Port Komunikacyjny (CPK) will draw up a shortlist of up to five following an assessment process.

Piotr Malepszak, CPK government representative, said: “In every procurement process, our priority is to work with Polish companies, so I am pleased to see such strong representation from them among the potential contractors for this project.

“Railway investments offer significant long-term contract opportunities that will strengthen Poland’s construction sector while supporting the national economy.”

In 2023, Poland’s Budimex won a €34m contract to prepare for the drilling of a 4km-long, high-speed rail tunnel in Łódź.

Piotr Rachwalski, a member of CPK’s management board, said: “We currently have two of the six construction procurement procedures for the Warsaw–Łódź high-speed rail line underway, representing the first HSR section in Poland

“The competitive dialogue process has provided us with valuable market feedback that will enable us to launch the remaining procurements as open tenders.”

The Warsaw to Łódź section of the “Y” line which will also travel to the new airport is due to open in 2032. The line will be extended to Poznań and Wrocław by 2036.
