A joint venture between UK and Chinese consulting engineers has been chosen to provide professional services for the reconstruction and extension of Lhasa Gonggar International Airport in Tibet.
The team of Arup and Beijing Zhonghang Zhucheng will provide structural, M&E and public health engineering services for the new terminal, and design consultancy services for the airport’s ancillary buildings.
The design competition for Terminal 3 was launched in 2016 by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Administration of China in Tibet to enable the airport to cope with increased demand.
After the extension of the 88,000 square metre Terminal 3 is completed, the airport is expected to handle 5.5 million passengers a year by 2020.
Lhasa Gonggar Airport became operational in 1965 and is located on the southern bank of Yarlung Tsangpo River in southern Tibet. With an elevation of 3,570m it is one of the highest altitude airports in the world.
Construction is scheduled to start later this year and is expected to be completed at the end of 2020.
