BAM awarded subway contract in Frankfurt

Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau, a German subsidiary of Holland’s Royal BAM Group, has been awarded a $250m contract for the construction of a subway tunnel in Frankfurt.

The 2km double-track tunnel will be constructed in the city centre, in the new Gateway Gardens district.

BAM will work on behalf of rail infrastructure manager DB Netz.

The cut-and-cover tunnel will be approximately 11m wide and 6m high.

Wayss & Freytag will move 900,000 cubic metres of land and will process 180,000 cubic metres of concrete.

The 35ha Gateway Gardens development is located next to Frankfurt airport and will contain offices, hotels and conference and exhibition spaces with leisure and retail facilities positioned around a central park.

The Gateway Gardens Tunnel will be operational by the end of 2019.

Wayss & Freytag is currently involved in the construction of the 440m long Europagarten Tunnel in Frankfurt, which will be completed in August 2016.

BAM were recently awarded a construction contract worth $170m for a hospital in Frankfurt.
