Besix overhauls all level crossings in Bilzen, Belgium

Belgian contractor Besix started work this month on a €31m project to replace all seven railway level crossings in the Belgian city of Bilzen.

Over three years, it will use bridges and tunnels to separate grades at the seven intersections, improving safety and train punctuality.

Besix and Besix Infra won the design-build contract from TUC Rail in December.

Besix plans four tunnels to carry roads under the tracks.

Three will use prefabricated, 450-tonne tunnel tubes that will be slid under the tracks.

The fourth tunnel will be built using the “Stross method”, in which Besix will build walls first, then the tunnel roof.
