Ireland’s Health and Safety Authority (HSA) shut down a construction site in Co. Kildare last week, citing “clear, ongoing danger to workers’ lives”.
The HSA secured a High Court order on Wednesday 16 July to close the site on Bridge Street in the town of Kilcock under Section 71 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005.
It will stay closed until specified measures have been taken to reduce the serious risk to the safety, health and welfare of workers at the site, the HSA said.
The action follows an extensive investigation by HSA inspectors.
“This is not a step we take lightly,” said HSA interim chief executive Mark Cullen.
“But where there is clear, ongoing danger to workers’ lives, we are legally and morally compelled to act.
“This court-ordered closure is necessary to reduce the risk of injury, or worse.”
Cullen added: “This should serve as a caution to all duty holders.”
