The Asia Pacific subsidiary of American-headquartered road construction company Verde Resources has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with building materials producer Highway International to collaborate on a pilot programme in Singapore.
The project involves testing material performance, production readiness, pavement mix designs, testing procedures, carbon accounting and commercial applications.
If the pilot scheme is successful another agreement is scheduled to be signed, where Highway would become Verde’s Net Zero Blueprint licensee in Singapore, furthering applications for carbon-sequestering roads, airfield pavements and other infrastructure.
Verde’s product uses biochar, a carbon-sequestering material produced through a thermal conversion process that transforms biomass waste into a stable form of carbon.
Carbon stored as biochar can naturally decompose or is processed by Verde for use in asphalt mixes.
Verde uses a platform that incorporates life-cycle assessment, environmental product declarations, carbon accounting and digital project-data tracking.
Highway’s management comments: “We see great promise in Verde’s technology and platform.
“Our MoU with Verde aligns with Highway’s vision of demonstrating how Singapore’s roads and infrastructure can evolve beyond their traditional functions to become part of the solution to global warming, transforming existing infrastructure into long-term carbon sinks.”
