A joint venture of Gilbane and Turner Construction has topped out the $1.7bn Wadsworth Center Laboratory in Albany, New York, a five-storey 663,000-sq-ft public health laboratory.
The new facility will accommodate 800 staff, combining five currently disconnected sites across the Greater Albany area into one, modern facility.
Commissioned by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York and the New York State Department of Health, the lab aims to bolster the state’s research and response to public health threats.
At present, 200 workers from 40 contractors are onsite, aiming to finish the facility by 2030.
Architect HOK was the design partner for the project, which is located at the W. Averell Harriman State Office Campus.
The building’s now completed structural steel frame consists of 8,200 major steel components, weighing approximately 5,545 tons.
Kathy Hochul, governor of New York, said when construction began earlier in 2026: “The new Wadsworth Center Laboratory is a powerful investment in the health of every person in New York State.
“The lab will allow the State to better predict and prepare for emerging threats to public health and will be one of the most authoritative public health laboratories in the country, impacting public health policy and practice at the state, national and international level.”
