The Croatian arm of Mexican materials company Cemex has announced plans to fit solar panels to some of its plants.

Cemex will cover the roofs of the Sv Juraj cement plant in Kastel Sucurac, the Sv Kajo cement plant in Solin and the Podsused facility in Zagreb, creating a generating capacity of 6.3MW

Some €3m of the €5m budget for the scheme is co-financed by the EU.

Marijan Zekic, Cemex’s Croatia project manager, said: “The savings that these measures will bring to us in terms of energy consumption will increase the efficiency of our production and reduce emissions from our operations and confirm our status as a manufacturing company that takes its obligations in terms of energy and thus climate efficiency very seriously.

“These are just some of the projects we are planning to achieve our climate goals."
