Construction has begun on the 110,000-sq-m Beijing Art Museum in the capital’s Tongzhou District, designed by Norwegian architect Snøhetta and the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD).
Beijing Art Museum aims to also act as a community space and a transport hub owing to its position above a metro line.
The museum will contain areas dedicated to cultural works, fine arts, fashion, design and contemporary pieces.
A central circular atrium will connect to public spaces, galleries, storage and support functions. Radiating out from a central core, are multiple expanding sections that are finished with lens-shaped, rippled façades that break down the boundaries between building and landscape.

The development has green features such as rooftop solar panelling and water management systems.
The construction manager will be Beijing Investment Group Co.
The museum is due to open in 2029.
