The Australian arms of UK contractor Laing O’Rourke and Malaysian engineer Gamuda have landed a US$1.6bn tunnelling contract for Sydney Metro West.
The team’s scope of work on the western tunnelling package includes:

- The excavation for a services facility at Rosehill
- The construction of earthworks, retaining structures and a utilities corridor
- The excavation and civil works for Parramatta and Westmead Stations.
When completed, Sydney Metro West will double the rail capacity between Greater Parramatta and Sydney’s central business district.
Cathal O’Rourke, Laing O’Rourke’s managing director, said: “We are proud to once again partner with the New South Wales government to deliver a vital piece of infrastructure for Sydney Metro West.
“Laing O’Rourke and Gamuda share an innovation mindset and a commitment to people which will be at the heart of this successful consortium.”
The work is due to be completed by the end of 2025.
