Leighton Asia awarded $1.2bn Hong Kong tunnel job

A team led by CIMIC subsidiary Leighton Asia has been awarded a US$1.2bn contract to construct the Tseung Kwan O-Lam Tin Tunnel in Hong Kong.

Leighton has a 51% stake in a joint venture with China State Construction Engineering, and the deal is worth an estimated $614m to the company.

The contract was awarded by the Hong Kong Government.

The tunnel will cater to increased traffic arising from an expected growth in population in Tseung Kwan O, a district in the New Territories.

The scope of works includes the construction of a 2.2km four-lane tunnel together with associated slip roads, branch tunnels, viaducts and tunnel portal facilities.

The works also involve the delivery of two ventilation buildings and an administration building, as well as implementation of all associated building and supporting works.

Marcelino Fernández, CIMIC chief executive, said: "Delivering large infrastructure projects in busy urban areas is a core capability for Leighton Asia.

"We value the opportunity to contribute our civil engineering capabilities to accommodate future growth through the expansion of infrastructure in such a fast growing city".

Work starts this month and will take approximately five years to complete.
