Mace does its duty-free at Muscat’s new terminal

UK project manager Mace has finished the job of overseeing the fit-out of 20,000 sq m of retail and lounge space at the new terminal of Oman’s Muscat International Airport.

Appointed in 2016 by Oman Airports, Mace oversaw the process from concept design to opening of the duty free and catering concessions, first- and business-class lounges, and other commercial tenant spaces such as car rental and banking.

The new terminal itself is 580,000 sq m in area with 86 check in counters, 10 baggage carousels and 29 aircraft piers. It will handle up to 12 million passengers per year, with future expansion allowing 48 million passengers per year to pass through the airport.

"This exemplar project is a perfect example of the type of work we’re looking to secure as part of our 2022 strategy for the business, targeting project and programme management and delivery partner roles in the aviation sector around the world," said Jason Millett, Mace’s COO for Consultancy.

Shiekh Samer Al Nabhani, general manager of commercial operations for Oman Airports, said: "We appreciate the work done by Mace and wish them success in their future projects."
