India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi, has announced plans to install solar panels on 10 million homes in the country.

Writing on X, Modi said: “The people of India should have their own solar roof top system on the roof of their houses.”

The move is aimed at reducing bills for the lower and middle classes as well as improving the country’s energy self sufficiency.

The announcement was made at the inauguration of the Ram temple in Uttar Pradesh.

Business news site Mint notes that India had planned to introduce 40GW of rooftop solar power by 2023, but only achieved 5.9GW. By 2030, the target is 292GW.
