Alstom sign $200m Cairo Metro contract

French railway engineer Alstom has signed two contracts worth $200m with Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels.

The company will supply a signalling and telecoms system, as well as infrastructure for the third phase of Cairo’s Metro Line 3.

The system covers 78km network and includes two complete lines, with a third partially open.

This line, in the next phase of construction, will add 18km and 15 stations. Once extended, the line will be able to carry more than 1.5 million passengers a day.

The company will also provide electromechanical equipment including power substations to feed the third rail, ventilation system and elevators and escalators.

Line 3 is scheduled to be fully completed in early 2022.
