A project team containing architect Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, engineer Arup, along with Taiwan engineering firm CECI and architect Fei & Cheng Associates has been appointed by the Taoyuan International Airport Corporation for the design and construction of its Terminal 3 (pictured).
The appointment follows an international design competition that also shortlisted UN Studio and Foster + Partners.
The project includes a terminal building, boarding gates, concourses, a multi-functional building, a network of service roads, aprons, taxiways and a people mover system.
This design drew inspiration from Taiwan’s landscape and surrounding sea to create a series of interior spaces beneath a single hard shell roof.
The main roof structure is supported by a series of four-legged towers, called "banyan columns" along the spine of the building, with alternating 36m and 72m spans in a west-east direction.
Arup’s offices in Hong Kong, Taipei and London will provide a full range of services including airport planning, structural engineering, building services, facade design, building sustainability, fire engineering, aviation fuel, lighting and acoustics.
When completed in 2020, the new terminal will be able to host 45 million passengers a year.
