Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has designed the Plus, a sustainable furniture factory for Norwegian manufacturer Vestre, located in a forest near the town of Magnor, on the Swedish border.
The 6,500 sq m project will be sited in a 300-acre park for hiking and camping, with a sloped roof offering a pathway over the facility, allowing views of the work being carried on inside.
Four main production halls connect at the centre of the development, creating a plus symbol.
The four units have a 21m free-spanning, cross-laminated timber roof, creating flexible, column free-spaces.
At the middle of the Plus is a logistics office and exhibition centre, which wraps around a circular public courtyard.
Smart solutions such as robots, self-driving trucks and a tablet computer that can manage the entire factory will be used.
The development aims to mimic Vestre’s eco-friendly production, with plans to become the first BREAM Outstanding industrial building in the Nordic region. It will also have a façade made from local timber, low-carbon concrete and recycled reinforcement steel, and a roof with 1,200 photovoltaic panels.
Excess heat from the panels will be connected to a thermal storage system, and there will also be heat pumps and energy wells.
