Larsen & Toubro joint venture to build Qatar World Cup stadium

Mumbai-based contractor Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been chosen to build a 40,000 capacity stadium for Qatar’s 2022 World Cup.

L&T’s construction arm has entered a joint venture with local firm Al Balagh Trading & Contracting, each company earning $360m.

Doha’s Al Rayyan Stadium is inspired by the form of sand dunes.

The stadium was designed by Danish consulting engineer Ramboll and London-based architect Pattern Design. Aecom is the project manager.

Pattern said the stadium would embrace "the country’s traditional culture and heritage" and act as a "gateway to the desert".

In 2014 Qatar dropped its plans to renovate the Al Rayyan bin Ali Stadium in favour of demolishing and rebuilding it.

The project is due to be finished in 2019.
