Major construction begins on $1.6bn Sydney light rail project

Work began today on the US$1.6bn Parramatta Light Rail project in Sydney, which will link the western and northern suburbs of the city via its central business district.

The first stage of the project is a 12km two-way overground track from Westmead to Carlingford, via Parramatta. It will include 16 stations, with services running every 7.5 minutes during peak times.

Stage 2 will be a 9km line from Parramatta in the centre of the city to the Olympic Park via Ermington, Melrose Park, and Wentworth Point.

According to the New South Wales government, the system will provide frequent, reliable services for the Greater Parramatta region, with around 28,000 people getting on and off every day by 2026.

UK consulting engineer Arup won roles on stage one and two of the project in 2018. The contractors working on it include Laing O’Rourke and Hochtief’s CPB.

Paul Toole, minister for transport and roads, said: "Today marks a significant step on a project that will transform transport connectivity in a growing part of Sydney.

"Some disruption is unavoidable, which is why we will continue working with businesses to ensure they have the information and support they need."
