Pandemic has led to “$9.6bn of delays and cancellations to US transport projects”

A report by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) has found that some $9.6bn of US transportation projects have been cancelled or delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

ARTBA found that 14 states have revealed $4.5bn of project delays or cancellations, and 19 local governments have said their total is $4.5bn.

The association was unable to estimate how many jobs losses had been caused by the pandemic, but cited the Federal Highway Administration’s findings that $1bn in transportation spending supports 13,000 jobs throughout the economy.

The report states: "Although many projects continue, as transportation construction is deemed essential, state and local governments and transportation authorities are beginning to feel the strain of declining revenues related to user fees and the overall slowdown in economic activity."
