Irish food manufacturer Glanbia and their US rival Leprino Foods have partnered with state development agency Enterprise Ireland to build a €130m mozzarella factory in Portlaoise, County Laois.
The news comes four days after BAM Ireland was selected to build a €25m Jarlsberg cheese production facility in the village of Mogeely, County Cork.
The mozzarella factory will produce 45,000 tonnes of cheese a year, create 250 jobs through construction and 78 full time jobs in cheese production.
Charlie Flanagan, minister for justice and equality, said: "The economic growth of our regions through the creation of sustainable jobs is a priority for government, and I am delighted to see this level of investment and such a significant number of jobs being created here today."
If awarded planning permission, construction will begin in 2018, and be completed in 2020.
