Schlaich Bergermann wins competition to build two bridges in Chengdu

Designs by German consulting engineer Schlaich Bergermann Partner have won two competitions for bridges over the Jiangxi River in Chengdu, southwest China.

The bridges will be built in Tianfu Airport City, a high-tech area in the south of the city.

The North Bridge will be built next to Tianfu International Airport. This will be a 280m cable-stayed span that will link the airport and surrounding industrial district to Tianfu Airport City.

The second will be the Number 4 Jiangxi River Bridge. This is a 180m structure that is designed to appear as if it is floating. It will be supported by 20m-high columns, and has a suspended pedestrian footbridge underneath the traffic bridge.

The competition judges credited the bridges’ "creative and skilful lighting design concepts, accentuating the different elements and functionalities of the structures".

Other entries came from Aecom, Arep, Carlos Fernandez Casado and Zaha Hadid Architects.
