Team chosen to design and build UK pavilion for Dubai Expo

UK firms McLaren Construction and branding agency Pico Group are to build the UK’s pavilion for the 2020 Dubai Expo, while artist Es Devlin will work with branding firm Avantgarde to design the 3,417 sq m, two-level structure.

The development will feature a 20m-tall cone made from protruding slats across multiple rows to create a jutted circular facade. The building will be made from cross-laminated timber on a concrete structure, and will make use of off-site manufacturing.

The expo is themed around "Innovating for a Shared Future", with the pavilion located in the expo’s "Opportunity" district.

Liam Fox, the UK’s international trade secretary, said: "As the first major international moment after we leave the EU, Expo 2020 Dubai will mark the UK becoming a truly independent trading nation.

"The Expo provides a global platform to showcase our ambition for the future, and our participation provides excellent opportunities for UK businesses that have already won major contracts.

"I am delighted that our newly appointed construction partners Pico and McLaren will be working with our design team to bring the best of British creativity, innovation and expertise to the world."

The expo will open on 20 October, 2020.
