An Italian joint venture of Webuild and Vianini Lavori has won a €2bn contract to build a 4km extension of Rome’s metro Line C with four new stations.
The new stretch will pass 25m under the Tiber River and connect Venezia Station with the new Clodio/Mazzini station, which will be joined by new stations at Chiesa Nuova, San Pietro and Ottaviano, the latter linking to Rome’s Line A.
Webuild described Chiesa Nuova and San Pietro as being “archaeological stations” that will fit into Rome’s urban fabric.
San Pietro Station will be set in the gardens of Castel Sant’AngeloIts, with a design aiming to complement a planned square.
Chiesa Nuova Station will be close to the Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella (pictured) and the Oratorio dei Filippini.
Construction will involve the team building 90m deep diaphragms.
Work is due to begin in January 2026 once the executive design has been signed off.
The new contract is an extension to the joint venture’s work on the San Giovanni–Colosseo/Fori Imperiali section of Line C, which is in the final testing phase.
When both jobs are completed, Line C will stretch 26km and feature 29 stations from Rome’s southeast to northwest.
