Construction has begun on a cricket stadium in California at Pomona, 50km east of downtown Los Angeles, set to host matches in the 2028 Summer Olympics.
The globally popular sport, the second most-watched in the world, hasn’t featured in the Games since the 1900 Paris Olympics, when Great Britain played France in a two-day match.
It’s going up on the Fairplex events campus, home to the annual LA County Fair for more than 100 years.
It’ll be the new home ground for the LA Knight Riders professional team, and will seat 15,000 fans when finished, with interim phases accommodating 5,000 and 8,500 spectators, local media report.
The 2028 event will be held from July 14-30. Six teams per gender will compete for medals, with 90 athletes allotted for each tournament, allowing nations to name 15-member squads.
Jay Shah, International Cricket Council’s chairman, said: “These are very exciting times for the game of cricket as it makes giant strides in establishing itself as a global sport.
“Our focus has been on expanding the footprint of cricket and being part of the Olympic movement is something that brings both pride and dreams with it.”
