CIOB launches “Adapt and Thrive” conference to probe industry’s future

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has launched a new, virtual conference exploring how the construction industry needs to change to meet the needs of society amid and after the pandemic.

The one-day "Adapt and Thrive" event will take place on Wednesday, 24 March 2021 featuring speakers from industry, government, technology and other key influencers who will share their vision for achieving an agile and productive industry that is fit to underpin the social and economic demands of modern day living.

The conference will be split into four main themes:

  • Rising to the challenges faced by the built environment;
  • The role of digital technology & modernisation – the key to success?;
  • Future Focus – How the industry needs to adapt to thrive;
  • Reimagining the built environment – industry leader perspective.

These will examine ways in which the current built environment is fit for purpose given the substantial changes society has gone through in the last year.

The conference will also assess the role of digital technology and how modernisation is key to future success and longevity in light of a shortage of skilled labour.

Speakers include Dame Judith Hackitt, Chair of the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety; Fergus Harradence, Deputy Director, Construction at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS); and the presidents of CIOB, RICS, RIBA, ICE and RTPI.

Mark Beard, President of the CIOB, said: "The CIOB Adapt and Thrive conference comes at a crucial time for the construction industry as we go through many unforeseen changes, adapting and embracing new ways of working.

"Our industry has been quick to respond to Covid-19; the pandemic has shown us that we are far more capable of change than we had previously imagined.

"These are uncertain times for everyone working in the industry, but this crisis has shown that construction can step up to the mark when required. I look forward to a lively exchange of ideas on 24 March and to CIOB’s Adapt and Thrive conference providing some of the necessary building blocks for the re-shaping of our industry."
