Texas-based engineer Jacobs is to carry out a feasibility study for a project to consolidate four ageing wastewater recovery facilities on New York City’s Rikers Island into a single complex that is capable of processing over 1 billion gallons of water a day.
Jacobs is working on the project alongside the NYC Department of Environmental Protection and local sub-consultants on the contract, which will end in October 2023.
Gary Morris, a senior vice president of Jacobs, said: “This feasibility study will examine reimagining the future of Rikers Island into what could be the biggest and boldest NYC-based wastewater infrastructure and community redevelopment programme of this century.
“This is a transformational opportunity to consider how to drive social equity, redefine the city’s landscape and create a legacy for NYC residents – all while providing a blueprint for how future water infrastructure projects can serve as catalysts for urban revitalisation."
The project coincides with an $8bn plan to replace the central Rikers Island detention complex with four jail towers in other areas of New York, which is being bid for by Lendlease, Tutor Perini, Gilbane and others.
