Five people in Latvia have been indicted over alleged fraud during the procurement of the 37km barbed-wire fence on the border with Belarus.

Latvia’s state news agency reports that four State Agency for Procurement officials and one businessman have been charged for supporting fraud and abusing their positions.

The charge was brought by Latvia’s Internal Security Bureau, which has so far initiated six criminal proceedings related to the construction of the eastern border involving what the news agency described as “a wide range of officials, businessmen and individuals”.

The state prosecutors’ office has said they will not comment further on an ongoing investigation.

Construction on the border wall between the two nations began in August 2021 according to Reuters.
