Balfour Beatty nabs $843m worth of Hong Kong contracts in one week

Balfour Beatty’s Hong Kong joint venture, Gammon Construction, has been awarded two major building contracts this week with a total value of $843m.

One is a $516.4m (HK$4 billion) superstructure contract by Taikoo Place Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of Swire Properties, for the redevelopment of Somerset House in Taikoo Place, a notable Hong Kong business hub.

The project involves redeveloping Somerset House into a 48-storey office building on top of a two-storey basement, covering a total gross floor area of approximately 94,000 sq m, as well as construction of the associated walkways, Balfour Beatty said yesterday.

Gammon Chief Executive Thomas Ho said building information modelling, or BIM, would be used to optimise design and avoid programme clashes.

"Gammon’s advanced technological standards and expertise in building construction was critical for the award of this project," he said.

Construction is soon to commence with completion scheduled for 2018. At construction peak the project will employ a workforce of 1,400.

Also announced yesterday is Gammon’s $326.4m (HK$2.6 billion) contract by Chinachem Group to construct a residential development project at Tseung Kwan O Town Lot No. 93.

The project includes the construction of six 12-18-storey residential towers, and five four-storey houses which together will provide 857 new homes.

Construction recently commenced and the project due for completion by the end of 2017.

Gammon Construction is a 50/50 joint venture between Balfour Beatty and Jardine Matheson.
