Egis and CID win Moroccan light rail development

A team led by French engineer Egis and Moroccan multidisciplinary consultant CID has won a contract to extend a light rail system serving the Moroccan capital of Rabat.

The project will add 30km to the 19km of tramlines that make up the present system. To the east, the line will extend to the Rabat-Salé airport, and to the south it will serve the wealthy Rabat Agdal district and Témara.

Preliminary design and planning of the extension is expected to take 12 months. Egis will oversee the project, and handle urban integration and operations; CID will cover data acquisition, traffic and ridership studies, geotechnical surveys and engineering structures.

Teams from Egis and CID worked together between 2005 and 2011 on the design and construction of the first two light rail lines, the first built in Morocco. The system began with 44 Citadis trams from French rolling stock maker Alstom. The system is run by French transport operator Transdev.
