Pennsylvania halts $6.6bn worth of transport projects

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has suspended all its construction projects in the state as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This halts just under $6.6bn worth of road and bridge projects currently underway. Projects will be on hold until further notice.

All its district and county maintenance offices are now closed, as well, although PennDOT crews are available to perform critical functions and emergency maintenance.

The move came after the state’s governor, Tom Wolf, called on non-essential businesses across the state to close for at least 14 days to help mitigate the spread.

"We strongly urge non-essential businesses across the commonwealth to do their part by temporarily closing as we work to flatten the curve and protect the health and safety of all Pennsylvanians," said Dennis Davin, secretary of the state’s Department of Community and Economic Development.

The governor further ordered that all restaurants and bars close their dine-in facilities.
