A memorial to the 43 people who died in the collapse of Genoa’s Morandi Bridge in August 2018 has been designed by a team including Italian firm Stefano Boeri Architetti, urban planner Metrogramma Milano and Dutch landscape designer Inside Outside
The "Radura della Memoria" – Italian for "glade of memory" – is a circle-shaped podium under the new bridge, 50m in diameter, made from trees that were felled by the Vaia storm some two months after the bridge collapsed, in October 2018.
On the podium will be 43 potted trees, each a different species reminiscent of Mediterranean scrub, their roots clad in protective fibres.
The central space is intended as a place for meditation and reading.
At night, lights will make the Radura a "landscape of lights and shadows", said Stefano Boeri Architetti.Â
Its location is not permanent. The memorial will stay in position until the renovation of Polcevera Park is complete, after which it will be dismantled and "reused in all its components", said Stefano Boeri Architetti, without indicating where.
A former industrial area, Polcevera Park will be turned into specialist gardens and parkland, and will be given a vast circular walkway.
The new park is also designed by Stefano Boeri Architetti, Metrogramma Milano and Inside Outside.
Work on the Renzo Piano-designed replacement bridge was completed, after 15 months, in early August.
