Logistics specialist Swissport Tanzania has said that construction of its new $13m high-tech import cargo facility at Julius Nyerere International Airport will be finished by the end of this month.
The terminal, with the capacity of handling 80,000 tonnes, is the first of its kind in Africa because it will use radio frequency identification (RFID) for automating cargo tracking, the company claimed.
Swissport Tanzania chief executive Gaudence Temu said the use of RFID cuts the time taken for record keeping from 30 minutes to ten.
"This is the first facility in Africa that uses state-of-art gadgets… we have invested for the future and almost double the capacity," Mr Temu told journalists on a tour of the facility, reports Tanzania’s Daily News newspaper.
The terminal has special areas for animals, radioactive material, a morgue, pharmaceuticals and cold storage facilities.
Swissport said the terminal can handle 30 tonnes of cargo at one time, even though currently the biggest plane that lands at Julius Nyerere International delivers 15 tonnes.
