New York firm Practice for Architecture and Urbanism (PAU) has been selected to expand the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.
The plan is to add 50,000 sq ft to IM Pei’s triangular glass structure. This will include a 10,000 sq ft gallery for travelling exhibits, a public waterfront area, interactive classrooms, an indoor performance space and a connection to the Great Lakes Science Centre.
PAU’s $100m design is described as "the Clash", as it both collides and harmonises with Pei’s pyramid.
Vishaan Chakrabarti, PAU’s founder, is quoted by The Architect’s Newspaper as saying: "Rock and Roll – like NASA and pizza -brings us together like few other cultural phenomena at this moment when our nation needs to come together.
"We are beyond ecstatic to have been selected by the Rock Hall to design the expansion of IM Pei’s heart of glass, which sits aglow upon Cleveland’s storied industrial waterfront, particularly in light of the architectural luminaries against whom we had the honour of competing. This is PAU’s stairway to heaven."
