Red Sea Global has finished an expansion of Saudi Arabia’s northwestern AlWajh International Airport that allows it to handle 500,000 passengers a year, up from 100,000.
It’s the gateway to the Amaala tourist destination, also developed by Red Sea Global.
Still being developed, this $6.1bn mega-resort combines eight resorts covering 4,200 sq km near the Red Sea.
The expanded airport has added routes and can now host most commercial aircraft, including the Airbus A320, Boeing B737, helicopters and seaplanes.
At present the airport receives three weekly connections from Riyadh and two from Jeddah operated by state company Saudia. International departures are expected to begin soon.
The renovation’s design is inspired by the Tabuk coastline and architecture in the town of AlWajh.
John Pagano, Red Sea Global’s chief executive, said it would support economic growth in the region.
“Today the people of Tabuk have an international-ready airport that increases connectivity to the rest of the Kingdom and beyond,” he said.
