A 22-year-old man died and three other people were injured on Wednesday when a bridge in the state of Missouri collapsed during a concrete pour.

The two-lane bridge was being renovated near the town of Kearny, some 40km north of Kansas City.

The accident trapped four people, killing one. The survivors were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.

The dead man was named as Connor R Ernst, 22, of California, Missouri.

The bridge had been closed since 2016. Construction started in May and was set to complete in early 2023.

According to the Clay Country Sheriff’s office, there were no safety concerns prior to the pour, and, before the pour, an engineering contractor was on site to inspect the structure.

The sheriff’s office is investigating and has passed its findings to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
